come up to meet you, tell you i'm sorry

they closed the winter humidity into a tiny plane in chicago, and so set our fate in motion, with me stuffed next to a window overlooking black blankness, and you pacing a walkway in indianapolis with useless flyers in your hands to keep them busy. by the time you stepped into me, this fate was already snowballing down the hill, growing beyond us. and we, learning to share a single space, so powerless and unaware.

ten days later, we drove north again, holding hands and listening to the beatles. it took a week after that for the understanding to sink in - we had absolutely no control. despite our best aims at each other, we had no way of reaching where we thought we wanted to be. we had tried, equally, and we had failed.

and so, stunned, we stood back up, you kissed me on the head, and we parted into our own rivers, floating with the current instead of trying to paddle upstream. because fate goes, and you don't direct it.

i poured my heart out,
it evaporated... see?
